### What Is Net-Metering?

Net-metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid. In Kashmir, this program is administered directly by the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL).

When your rooftop solar panels produce more electricity than your home consumes during sunny afternoon hours, the surplus power is automatically sent into the local distribution grid. Your electricity meter literally spins backwards!

How the Bi-Directional Meter Works

Standard meters only count electricity moving from the pole into your house. During solar commissioning, KPDCL replaces this with a Bi-Directional Smart Meter featuring two counters: 1. Import Units: Power consumed from KPDCL during night-time or heavily overcast spells. 2. Export Units: Surplus clean electricity delivered from your solar panels into KPDCL’s grid.

At the end of the billing cycle, KPDCL bills you only for the Net Units ($Import - Export$). If your export exceeds your import, the remaining credits roll over to the subsequent billing month.

Seasonal Banking: Summer Surplus Pays for Winter Warmth

One of the greatest benefits in Kashmir is the annual settlement cycle: - Spring & Summer (April to September): High solar irradiance yields massive surplus generation. A 5 KW system routinely produces 600 to 750 units per month, building up a substantial credit balance. - Winter (November to February): When electric heaters, hamam pumps, and water geysers ramp up power consumption, your accumulated summer credits offset the winter surge, keeping your net payable bill at or near zero!
